much more than "just" Joshua Trees

For much of the year, the Ocotillo appears to be an arrangement of large dead sticks, except immediately after rain; then the plant explodes into a tight cluster of red flowers at each branch tip	Be extremely careful not to accidentally walk into the needle-sharp bristles of the Cholla Cactus. Not only will you damage the cactus, but you will find yourself pulling dozens of needles out of your skin. Bring a pair of tweezers just in case you find a few dozen needles in your ankle. You'll need it.	Giant piles of monzogranite rock stand tall among the forests of Joshua trees. The rocks are most impressive at sunset, when they are covered by layers of light and beautiful rich colors.	If you find a desert tortoise, take pictures, get down and look at it, watch it to see how it moves and what it eats, and then walk away knowing how fortunate you are to have seen a vanishing, regal creature.

Key's View offers spectacular views of the valley and surrounding mountains. Here you stand on the shoulder of Little San Bernardino Mountains looking southwest at Coachella Valley (Palm Springs, Indio) and looking south towards Salton Sea and Mexico.	Desert plants like aloe wildly grow amidst looming mountains. Aloe was recorded as being used as far back as 2000 years ago. The juice of this plant mixed with water is said to have a tonic and refreshing effect on the body system.	Joshua Tree Natl. Park can seem unwelcoming, even brutal during the heat of a summer day, but it is remarkable how much the landscape changes and softens when the sunset blazes across the desert mountains in the last moments of light.	Mormon pioneers are said to have named this species "Joshua" Tree because it mimicked the Old Testament prophet Joshua waving them, with upraised arms, on toward the promised land.

Viewed from the road, this desert park only hints at its vitality. Closer examination reveals a fascinating variety of scenery, plants and animals that make their home in this land shaped by strong winds, unpredictable torrents of rain, and climatic extremes.
